About

Nether Stowey sits at the lower slopes of the Quantock Hills and grew around its medieval street plan and market place. Samuel Taylor Coleridge lived here in the late 1790s; his cottage is preserved and records his time in the village. The Coleridge Way begins in the village, linking lanes and hill tracks into the hills above. The parish church and the compact high street reflect the settlement’s long role as a local centre.

Cannington lies a few miles to the south and is centred on Cannington Court, a historic house with a walled garden that now forms part of local horticultural teaching and events. The village sits on the edge of the Somerset Levels, with fields and drainage ditches running toward the estuary. Combwich occupies a small creek on the River Parrett with a quay at Combwich Pill; its tidal setting and salt‑marsh fringe mark the transition from inland levels to the estuary.
