Dundee City sits on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, contained within the compact council area that meets Angus to the north and east and Perth and Kinross to the west and south. The city grew around port activity, jute mills and shipbuilding; remnants of that industrial past remain along the waterfront and in warehouse conversions. The volcanic plug known locally as the Law rises from the city centre and marks the original settlement point. The River Tay and harbour shape movement and development across the district. Dundee houses two universities, with Abertay noted for computer games education and the University of Dundee for medicine and life sciences. The waterfront includes Discovery Point, where the RRS Discovery is berthed, and the V&A Dundee, the V&A’s only museum in Scotland. Cultural venues, galleries and research institutes sit alongside manufacturers and small businesses, while markets and food producers keep older trade links alive — for example, the city’s association with marmalade and the Dundee cake remains part of its commercial identity.
