About

East Dunbartonshire sits immediately north of Glasgow and extends from suburban river valleys to the lower slopes of the Campsie Fells. Principal towns include Bearsden, Milngavie, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch, Lennoxtown and Lenzie. Commuter rail stations link the area with Glasgow, while the Forth and Clyde Canal runs through Kirkintilloch and the Antonine Wall crosses near Bearsden, where a Roman bathhouse was excavated. Local green spaces include Mugdock Country Park and the network of towpaths and rivers that shape settlement patterns.

Milngavie marks the southern terminus of the West Highland Way and provides one of the main access points into the hills. The landscape changes from terraces and Victorian villas in Bearsden to the Campsie foothills around Lennoxtown, with rivers such as the Allander and the Kelvin flowing through the district. Council services are centred on Kirkintilloch, and recreational use of canals, parks and hill paths is common. Farming, small business and commuter services form the principal economy of the area.
