About

Fife sits on a peninsula between the Firth of Tay to the north and the Firth of Forth to the south. The area includes towns such as Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes and St Andrews. The coastline is lined with fishing villages including Anstruther and Pittenweem, and islands such as the Isle of May lie off the shore. The Fife Coastal Path runs along much of this coast and passes harbours, beaches and cliffs. St Andrews contains the university and the Old Course, the golf links long associated with the origins of the modern game and used for major championships.

Inland the Lomond Hills rise above rolling farmland, with West Lomond as Fife’s highest point. The area has a history of coal mining and of textile and linoleum manufacture centred on Kirkcaldy, while Rosyth hosts naval dockyard facilities. Dunfermline Abbey houses the tomb of Robert the Bruce and marks the county’s medieval royal connections. Glenrothes was developed as a planned town and now accommodates local government and industrial estates alongside agriculture and fishing that continue to shape the local economy and heritage.
