About

Fort William and Ardnamurchan ward covers a large section of the western Highland mainland, extending from the town of Fort William itself out to the most westerly point of Great Britain at Ardnamurchan Point. The area is dominated by Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, and the surrounding mountainous terrain of Lochaber. Glenfinnan, at the head of Loch Shiel, is marked by a monument commemorating the 1745 Jacobite rising.

The ward's lengthy coastline includes the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula, a rugged landscape of ancient volcanic geology and sparse settlement. Key sea lochs such as Loch Sunart and Loch Linnhe define the intricate shoreline. Economic activity is centred on Fort William, with its distillery and aluminium smelter, while much of the wider ward relies on forestry, crofting, and tourism linked to its dramatic natural landscapes and historic sites.
