Hawick and Hermitage ward covers a large rural area in the Scottish Borders, centred on the town of Hawick. The landscape is defined by the valleys of the River Teviot and the Slitrig Water, with rolling hills and farmland extending outwards. The ward includes smaller settlements like Denholm and Bonchester Bridge, alongside more remote upland areas. Its economy has historically been linked to textiles, particularly knitwear and tweed production.
The Hermitage Water runs through a deep, wooded valley in the western part of the ward, leading to the historic Hermitage Castle. This stark, 14th-century fortress stands isolated in the moorland, associated with centuries of border conflict. The area offers extensive walking and cycling routes, including stretches of the Borders Abbeys Way and the Four Abbeys Cycle Route, connecting to the region's monastic heritage.
