About

Mid and Upper Nithsdale is a large, rural ward in eastern Dumfries and Galloway, centred on the River Nith. It encompasses the historic market town of Thornhill and several smaller villages, including Sanquhar, Penpont, and Moniaive. The landscape is characterised by rolling farmland and upland moors, with the Lowther Hills forming a significant part of its northern boundary.

The area is defined by its river valleys and a history connected to textiles and mining. Sanquhar holds the registration for the world's oldest post office, operating continuously since 1712. Economic activity is primarily agricultural, alongside some forestry. The Southern Upland Way long-distance path traverses the ward, utilising old drove roads through the hills.
