About

The North Isles ward encompasses the northernmost islands of the Orkney archipelago. It includes a number of inhabited islands such as Westray, Sanday, and Stronsay, along with smaller isles like Papa Westray and North Ronaldsay. The landscape is characterised by low-lying farmland, expansive sandy beaches, and important coastal wetlands. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, and small-scale aquaculture, with a scattered population across the settlements.

A distinctive drystone dyke encircles the coastline of North Ronaldsay, designed to keep the island's unique breed of seaweed-eating sheep on the shore. The area is rich in archaeological sites, including the Neolithic farmstead at Knap of Howar on Papa Westray, one of the oldest standing houses in northern Europe. Regular ferry and air services connect the individual islands to each other and to Kirkwall on the Orkney Mainland.
