About

The North Isles ward encompasses the northernmost islands of Shetland, including Yell, Unst, and Fetlar, along with numerous smaller isles. This area is characterised by a low-lying, peat-covered landscape intersected by deep sea voes and stretches of exposed coastline. The settlement pattern is one of scattered crofting townships and small villages, with the ferry terminals at Gutcher and Belmont serving as crucial transport hubs.

The local economy has traditional foundations in crofting and fishing, with salmon aquaculture now significant in the sheltered voes. Unst is home to the UK's most northerly settlement, Haroldswick, and the former RAF base at Saxa Vord, which now hosts a distillery and other developments. The islands are important for seabird colonies and hold substantial nature reserves, such as on Fetlar for rare breeding birds.
