About

Perth and Kinross sits in central Scotland, stretching from the lowland plains around the city of Perth into the hills of Perthshire. The River Tay flows east across the district and is used for salmon fishing and water transport; lochs such as Tay, Rannoch and Tay-side Loch Tay sit among glens and woodland. The Highland Boundary Fault crosses the area, producing a clear transition from arable fields and fruit farms to upland pasture and conifer forest. Towns and villages include Perth, Kinross, Crieff, Pitlochry, Dunkeld and Blairgowrie, each set among estates, river valleys and hill tracks.

History and land use are visible across the district. Scone Palace and the nearby Moot Hill mark the medieval coronation site for Scottish kings. The Ben Lawers range above Loch Tay is managed as a nature reserve and supports alpine plant communities tied to its geology. Estates, hydroelectric schemes and hill farming shape land management, and forest parks and footpaths provide access to glens, waterfalls and ridge routes within the council area.
