About

Renfrewshire sits on the south bank of the River Clyde in west central Scotland and is administered from Paisley, its largest town. The White Cart Water runs through Paisley, where 19th-century thread and textile mills lined the river and gave rise to the paisley motif used worldwide. Towns such as Renfrew, Johnstone and Erskine form a ring of smaller communities connected by the M8 and A737 corridors. Glasgow Airport occupies the Abbotsinch site within the council area, and the Erskine Bridge carries the A898 across the Clyde at the district's northern fringe.

Paisley Abbey dates from the 12th century and sits beside the town centre; Paisley Museum holds collections that document local textile history. The University of the West of Scotland has a campus in Paisley, and parks such as Barshaw Park provide space for sport and events. Industrial estates and logistics hubs have grown around former mill sites and the airport, while conservation areas preserve street patterns and stone buildings that reflect the district's industrial past. Regular community programmes and markets keep civic life focused on town centres.
