Saxilby & Scampton

Saxilby and Scampton lie west and northwest of Lincoln in West Lindsey, a mix of village settlements, farmland and transport links. Saxilby sits beside low-lying river plain and has a railway station that provides regular services into Lincoln; the village contains local shops, a primary school and community facilities serving surrounding hamlets. Roads and field patterns reflect long-established agricultural use, with drainage channels and hedgerows marking field boundaries. Housing clusters along the main street sit close to older farmsteads and allotments used by residents.
Scampton is dominated by the former RAF station just north of the village, where the layout of runways and perimeter tracks is still part of the landscape. The station was home to 617 Squadron during the Second World War and later hosted the RAF display team, links that are visible in veterans’ records and local memory. Surrounding fields are used for arable cropping and livestock grazing, and the village supports a parish hall and small-scale community activities that reflect rural life adjacent to an airfield.
