Shetland West

Shetland West ward covers the western peninsula of Mainland Shetland, a landscape of peat moor, lochs, and a deeply indented coastline. The area includes the settlements of Walls and Sandness, historically significant for fishing and crofting. The terrain is largely open and exposed, with the Atlantic Ocean shaping its character. The West Mainland Fault is a significant geological feature influencing the coastline's form.

The area's economy remains connected to aquaculture and small-scale agriculture. The ward contains several important archaeological sites, including the Broch of West Burrafirth. Transport is focused on the A971 road, with ferry services linking islands like Papa Stour to the mainland at West Burrafirth. The landscape is dominated by the large freshwater Loch of Grunafirth.
