About

South Lanarkshire is a council area in central Scotland stretching from the southern edges of Greater Glasgow into the Southern Uplands. The area contains towns such as East Kilbride, Hamilton (council headquarters), Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Lanark, Larkhall and Carluke. The River Clyde runs through the district and passes the New Lanark cotton mills and the Falls of Clyde; New Lanark is a World Heritage Site linked to the social reforms of Robert Owen. Hamilton Mausoleum stands beside Chatelherault Country Park; its internal vault once produced one of the longest recorded echoes in a man-made building.

Land use moves from suburban belts and commuter towns in the north to farmland and orchards in the Clyde Valley and upland grazing to the south. Transport routes include the M74 and rail lines providing links to Glasgow and beyond, while local services centre on market towns and East Kilbride’s town centre. Walkable hills such as Tinto and river corridors attract walkers and anglers, and conservation areas protect woodland and river habitats. The mix of industrial heritage, farmland and upland terrain shapes planning and community life across the district.
