About

South Ribble is a local government district in Lancashire, North West England, occupying the south bank of the River Ribble immediately south of the city of Preston. Principal towns include Leyland (the administrative centre), Penwortham, Bamber Bridge, Walton-le-Dale, Lostock Hall and Longton. The district combines residential suburbs with farmland and a river corridor. Rail services run through stations at Leyland, Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hall on the line into Preston, and local bus routes link settlements across the borough.

Industry and heritage sit alongside open land: Leyland developed as the home of Leyland Motors and vehicle manufacturing remains part of the town’s identity. Samlesbury contains the Tudor manor Samlesbury Hall, and the adjacent aerodrome has long been associated with aircraft production and maintenance. The River Ribble shapes floodplain and fields along the borough’s western edge, and public paths follow parts of the riverbank for walking and birdwatching. Local government services operate from Leyland, and parish councils handle rural issues. Sports clubs and community groups are active across the borough.
