Troup ward covers a coastal stretch of Aberdeenshire, including the fishing villages of Gardenstown and Crovie. The area is defined by its steep, rugged cliffs and a narrow strip of land between the hills and the North Sea. Agriculture and fishing remain central to the local economy, with a landscape of farmland giving way to rocky shorelines.
The settlement pattern is distinctive, with Crovie's houses built directly along a single-file footpath against the sea wall, accessible only on foot. The ward extends inland past the village of Pennan, following the Troup Head peninsula which hosts a large colony of nesting seabirds, including gannets.
