Tweeddale East is a predominantly rural ward covering a large expanse of the central Scottish Borders. Its landscape is defined by rolling hills, agricultural land, and the upper reaches of the River Tweed, which flows through its northern part. The area includes smaller settlements like Innerleithen and Walkerburn, alongside numerous farms and isolated dwellings. Economic activity has historically centred on livestock farming, forestry, and textile production, particularly tweed.
The ward contains a significant portion of the Tweed Valley, with its geography influencing local life and industry. Traquair House, near Innerleithen, is cited as Scotland's oldest continually inhabited house. The region is also known for its network of hill trails and forestry tracks, used for walking and mountain biking. This setting provides a contrast to the more urban character of Peebles, which lies just outside the ward's western boundary.
