About

Brighton and Hove sits on the English Channel coast in South East England as a unitary authority covering the joined towns of Brighton and Hove. The seafront is known for a long shingle beach, the Victorian Brighton Palace Pier and the skeletal remains of the West Pier beside the British Airways i360, a 162-metre observation tower on the promenade. Close to the seafront the Royal Pavilion faces Pavilion Gardens; its Indo-Saracenic architecture reflects the town’s Regency development. The narrow streets of the Lanes contain small shops, cafes and a dense pattern of alleys.

The district contains neighbourhoods such as Brunswick, Kemp Town and Hove, with stretches of promenade and public lawns along the coast. Brighton railway station is the main rail hub for the area. Arts venues include the Brighton Dome and theatres around the city centre, and annual events such as the Brighton Festival and Pride make regular use of public spaces from Madeira Drive to the seafront. The local authority merged in 1997 and was granted city status in 2000.
