About

Chieveley, East Ilsley and Compton form a rural triangle in West Berkshire, dominated by rolling chalk downland and large arable fields. The landscape is defined by the ancient Ridgeway path crossing through and the presence of several historic estates. East Ilsley was historically a significant sheep market, its wide main street a remnant of that past. The area is primarily agricultural, with scattered farms and woodland patches, and the M4 motorway cuts across its northern edge.

The villages are small and linear, built from local flint and brick. Compton is home to a notable watermill on the River Pang, a rare surviving example in the county. The community is quiet, centred around parish churches, village halls and pubs. The area is known for its racehorse training gallops on the downs, with strings of horses a common sight on the network of bridleways and quiet lanes that connect the settlements.
