Hoyland

Hoyland is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It expanded rapidly in the 19th century as coal mining grew, and traces of that industrial past remain in the townscape: terraces of former miners' houses, the footprints of pit sites and lengths of disused rail that once served collieries. The main street contains shops, small businesses and civic services that serve the surrounding residential streets, while churches and community organisations reflect long-established local networks.

Today the area mixes older housing with later estates and pockets of open space where former industrial land has been reclaimed for walking and sport. Local schools, a library and a community centre form focal points for events and clubs, and footpaths link the town to neighbouring green corridors. Views from higher streets give glimpses over the valley to the north, and stretches of converted rail alignment provide direct, level routes used by walkers and cyclists rather than vehicles.
