About

Kemptown ward lies immediately east of Brighton's city centre, hugging the coastline. The area is primarily residential, characterised by a mix of Regency and Victorian terraced housing along a network of steep streets leading down to the sea. Its main thoroughfare is St James's Street, which runs parallel to the cliff top and contains a concentration of shops, cafes, and services for the local community. The ward's eastern boundary is defined by the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The seafront is dominated by the chalk cliffs and the undercliff walk, a pedestrian path built between the cliff face and the sea wall. A distinctive local feature is the presence of two small, functioning beaches accessible only at low tide, known as the nudist beaches. The ward also contains the green space of the Steine and the historical Kemp Town enclave, from which the area derives its name, with its grand, early 19th-century crescents.
