Lansdown & Montpellier

Montpellier sits immediately north of Cheltenham’s Promenade and forms a compact shopping and dining quarter close to the town centre. Streets are lined with independent shops, galleries and wine bars, and the area is centred on Montpellier Gardens, where a cast-iron bandstand hosts occasional concerts and community events. Narrow lanes and a short arcade network give the quarter a walkable feel, with many businesses occupying ground-floor premises in Regency and Victorian buildings that step down toward the Promenade.

Lansdown rises directly above Montpellier and is made up mainly of long terraces and crescents from the 19th century. Its streets are largely residential, with a scattering of small hotels and professional offices, and several stretches afford clear views across the town. Routes linking Lansdown and Montpellier include short lanes and pedestrian staircases, so the two areas work together for shopping and leisure while Lansdown keeps a quieter, residential character.
