About

Cheltenham is a town and borough in Gloucestershire, South West England, developed as a spa after mineral springs attracted visitors in the 18th century. The town centre contains Regency terraces and the Promenade, with Pittville Pump Room at the heart of Pittville Park. The Wilson museum and art gallery holds local collections and archives, and the composer Gustav Holst was born in the town. Streets around Montpellier feature independent shops, a bandstand and a rotunda that date from the spa period.

Cheltenham stages a program of festivals that use permanent venues: Cheltenham Racecourse hosts the Cheltenham Festival, highlighted by the Gold Cup, and the long-running Cheltenham Literature Festival draws international authors. Other events cover jazz, science and food and often use the town hall and racecourse facilities. The borough reaches the Cotswold scarp, where walkers visit Leckhampton Hill and the Devil’s Chimney outcrop as a local landmark. Rail and road links connect Cheltenham to the wider South West and the Midlands.
