Pembury & Matfield

Pembury and Matfield are neighbouring settlements located to the east of Royal Tunbridge Wells, characterised by a mix of residential development and open countryside. The area is primarily residential, with housing ranging from historic cottages to modern estates, set along roads that quickly give way to agricultural land and woodland. Pembury is the larger of the two, with a defined village centre containing essential shops and services, while Matfield retains a more distinctly rural and dispersed feel centred around its large green.

The landscape is defined by the High Weald, with rolling fields, hedgerows, and scattered farmsteads. A notable feature is the presence of the extensive Pembury Hospital site, a major local employer with a significant architectural presence. The area is crossed by several public footpaths, including those leading into Bedgebury Forest to the south, providing direct access to walking and cycling routes through the wooded terrain.
