About

Appleby-in-Westmorland sits on the banks of the River Eden and was long the county town of Westmorland. The Norman keep of Appleby Castle stands beside the river and the Moot Hall marks the town centre. Streets rise from the riverside to the castle mound, and the town still hosts an annual Horse Fair that draws travellers and local buyers for several days each June. Local services, small shops and a market serve surrounding farms and hamlets rather than larger urban centres.

A few miles south, Shap and Kirkby Thore sit where hard rock meets farmland. Shap is known for its pink granite and the old quarry workings that supplied stone for local buildings; the line of the West Coast railway climbs past Shap Summit nearby. Shap Abbey’s ruins lie close to the village. At Kirkby Thore the Roman fort of Virosidum leaves earthworks and cropmarks in surrounding fields, and archaeological trenches have revealed Roman layouts beside modern farms. Roads here link dispersed settlements and lanes run out across fell and pasture.
