About

Appledore sits on the west bank of the River Torridge estuary and retains a working quayside and boatyard activity. Streets run down to the water between slipways and timber piers where small commercial boats and fishing vessels lie at low tide. The village grew around shipbuilding and maritime trades; traces of that industry remain in the form of yard sheds, dry berths and a narrow channel used by local skiffs. Footpaths follow the estuary edge and give direct views over mudflats and salt marshes that are part of the tidal system here.

Northam North includes the common ground of Northam Burrows, a flat coastal expanse of dunes, salt marsh and grazing land that meets the sea. The Burrows host the Royal North Devon Golf Club, a links course founded in 1864 and played across the saltmarsh and dunes. Public access runs alongside the fairways and along the shore, linking the settlement edge to walking routes and the working coastal landscape that frames this part of Torridge.
