About
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon is a local government district in Northern Ireland covering Armagh city and the towns of Banbridge, Portadown, Lurgan and the planned town of Craigavon. The district sits amid farmland crossed by the River Bann and smaller waterways, with a mix of market towns, industrial areas and countryside. Armagh retains its role as an ecclesiastical centre with two cathedrals dedicated to St Patrick, and the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium stands on Observatory Hill, serving as a long‑standing centre for astronomy and public engagement.
Banbridge grew around linen bleaching on the River Bann and retains manufacturing and retail activity rooted in that history. Portadown and Lurgan developed with the railways and act as transport and service hubs for the surrounding area. The district also contains Navan Fort (Emain Macha), an archaeological site associated with early Irish royal ritual, and a network of towpaths, parks and community centres used for walking and local events. Local libraries, museums and council records document agriculture, linen and urban change across the district.
