Audley End, Ashdon & the Chesterfords

The Audley End, Ashdon and the Chesterfords area sits in the northern part of Uttlesford, north-west Essex, where river valleys meet arable lowland. Audley End House and its park lie close to the village cluster, with the estate’s miniature railway and the nearby Audley End station on the Cambridge–London line marking the roadside edge of the park. Great and Little Chesterford occupy the Cam valley: archaeological work has revealed Roman settlement and cemetery remains there, and a modern cluster of small businesses and homes sits alongside the river floodplain. Chesterford Research Park, set beside the village, brings laboratories and offices into the local mix of land uses.

Ashdon occupies higher ground a few miles west of the Cam corridor, with a network of lanes, footpaths and commons that link farmsteads and small woodlands. Local life has long revolved around farming and parish institutions; stone and flint buildings, village greens and hedgerow-lined fields show continuity of settlement. The area’s pattern of lanes and public footpaths makes it a place where historic traces, working farms and contemporary research facilities exist within short distances of one another.
