About

Berkeley and Sharpness sit on the west bank of the River Severn within Stroud district in Gloucestershire. Berkeley is centred on Berkeley Castle, the ancestral home of the Berkeley family, and a compact town of streets, farmland and market facilities. Close to the waterline the decommissioned Berkeley nuclear power station marks the estuary skyline; remnants of industrial activity and working agricultural land sit side by side. Local lanes and footpaths link villages, orchards and the low-lying salt marshes that fringe the river.

Sharpness grew as a deep-water port in the 19th century and retains the dock and the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal that carries boats inland to Gloucester. The old Severn Railway Bridge once crossed from Sharpness to Lydney; several of its piers remain visible from the shore after the bridge collapsed in 1960. At Purton, just outside the canal entrance, the beached ship hulks along the riverbank form a line of wrecks used to protect the bank from erosion. Towpaths, birdlife on the mudflats and working quays give the area a clear maritime character.
