About

Box, Colerne and Rudloe form a cluster of villages in north Wiltshire linked by lanes, stone walls and former quarry workings. Box sits on the A4 and is dominated by the Great Western Railway crossing and Box Tunnel, a 1.83-mile rail tunnel engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Historic stone extraction around Box supplied the local building material found in many houses and in the exposed faces of old quarries. Tracks and rights of way lead from the village across patches of limestone downland and small copses, and remnants of quarry infrastructure remain visible in the landscape.

Colerne occupies higher ground to the north, giving long views across the plain and a pattern of hedged fields and scattered farmsteads. Twentieth-century military activity left its mark at RAF Colerne and nearby sites; some former service buildings have been repurposed while others sit within wooded enclosures. Rudloe, set close to Corsham, includes a country manor and traces of storage and service facilities that once supported regional military operations. The three settlements are connected by local roads and a network of public paths that cross farmland and former industrial areas.
