About

Boxmoor and Apsley lie within the borough of Dacorum, on the southern edge of Hemel Hempstead. Much of the area is shaped by waterways: the chalk stream of the River Bulbourne runs through Boxmoor's water meadows and meets the Grand Union Canal near Apsley. Land held by the Box Moor Trust preserves towpaths, meadowland and common grazing, and the sequence of pollarded willows and ditches is part of the local landscape. Paths follow the river and canal, and small-scale recreational spaces sit alongside playing fields and community facilities.

Apsley grew up around the canal and its mills; former paper mill buildings and canal-side wharves remain close to the lock and marina. The settlement has a compact high street and its own railway station on the West Coast Main Line, giving a direct physical link along the same corridor as the waterway. Street pattern and building plots reflect the industrial origins by the canal, while allotments, bridges and lock gates are part of everyday local detail.
