About

Bradford-on-Avon is a historic market town situated in a steep-sided valley of the River Avon in west Wiltshire. The area is characterised by its local limestone architecture, with many buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries when the town was a centre for the woollen cloth industry. The river is crossed by an ancient, multi-arched bridge which includes a small, locked chapel that once served as a prison.

The landscape surrounding the town consists of wooded slopes and the Kennet and Avon Canal, which runs parallel to the river through a series of locks. A notable local feature is the large, Saxon-era Church of St. Laurence, a rare and largely intact survival from before the Norman Conquest. The area's economy has shifted from textiles to a mix of light industry, commerce, and tourism centred on its well-preserved heritage.
