Buntingford & Great Hormead

Buntingford and Great Hormead lie in East Hertfordshire around the valley of the River Rib. Buntingford is a small market town on the Rib, where the stream runs through a sequence of mill pools and under a compact high street of period buildings. The town retains a market place, independent shops, a community hall and primary services that serve surrounding farms and hamlets. Footpaths and lanes follow the Rib valley, linking riverside meadows, hedgerows and small orchards that frame the town on both sides.

Great Hormead sits a short distance north of Buntingford as a scattered village of farms, lanes and a parish church with medieval fabric. Fields rise away from the village into patchwork farmland, and a network of public rights of way connects the Hormeads to the Rib valley trails. Local land use remains strongly agricultural, with mixed arable and pasture plots and traditional field boundaries, giving a sense of the historic parish pattern that still structures this part of East Hertfordshire.
