About

Butler's Wharf sits on the south bank of the Thames in Southwark, formed from a cluster of late 19th-century warehouses that once handled tea, spices and other imported goods. The brick buildings line Shad Thames and retain cast-iron loading bays and external hoists where goods were lifted from the riverfront quays. Over time the warehouses were adapted to housing, restaurants and studios; riverside terraces and cobbled lanes run between the converted buildings and the waterfront, with narrow service passages that reveal the area's industrial past.

Queen's Walk is the public riverside promenade that runs alongside Butler's Wharf, following the riverbank through this part of Southwark. The path includes wide paved sections, mooring rings, timber piers and a sequence of riverside steps that provide access up to the warehouses and the streets above. The route is used by people walking, cycling or pausing at the benches and waterside railings, and it negotiates the changes in level and the surviving riverside fixtures that mark the site's history.
