About

Burbage Common and Woods sits on the western edge of Buxton, a mix of open common, planted woodland and gritstone outcrops that channel local footpaths and bridleways. Tracks climb from lower streets onto the moor and give access to picnic spots, a network of stone steps and a scattering of boundary stones and old quarry scars. The area is used for walking and horse riding, and several public paths link the common to residential streets and small pockets of mixed woodland at lower levels.

Harpur Hill lies immediately west of the common and contains a mix of housing, community facilities and the remains of the town’s lime industry: old kilns, spoil heaps and disused quarries sit close to houses and lanes. Crowning Grin Low is the stone tower known locally as Solomon’s Temple; the tower stands on the hill above the limeworks and is visible from lanes and paths across the ward. The combination of former industrial sites, working commons and interconnected paths gives the area a patchwork character underlain by limestone and millstone grit.
