Castle

Castle ward encompasses the historic core of Carlisle, defined by its ancient city walls and the imposing Carlisle Castle at its northern edge. The area functions primarily as a commercial and administrative centre, containing the city's main shopping districts, the Town Hall, and the courts. The layout follows the old medieval street pattern, with English Street and Scotch Street serving as key thoroughfares.

A defining characteristic is the visible integration of Roman, medieval, and Victorian architecture. Sections of the original city walls, built from distinctive red sandstone, remain intact and walkable. Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, located near the castle, sits on the site of a former Roman fort, with parts of the ancient frontier, Hadrian's Wall, running close to the ward's southern boundary.
