Castlewellan

Castlewellan ward encompasses the town of the same name along with surrounding rural townlands in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains. The area is defined by its mixed agricultural land, forest plantations, and the prominent presence of Castlewellan Forest Park. This large park features a Victorian-era castle and is centred on a lake, offering extensive walking and cycling trails through its arboretum and peace maze.

The local economy has traditional roots in agriculture and forestry, with the town serving as a market centre. A distinctive feature is the annual international sheepdog trials held at the forest park, attracting competitors and spectators. The ward's landscape is characterised by drumlin hills and views towards the granite peaks of the Mournes to the south, with the main A25 road providing a key transport link through the area.
