Central Bath & Lansdown

Central Bath is the compact city core built around the Abbey and the Roman Baths, with streets laid out in Georgian terraces and connecting lanes. The Roman Baths sit over the thermal spring that emerges at about 46°C and supplies roughly a million litres of water a day, a source later tapped by the modern Thermae Bath Spa. Public spaces include the Abbey churchyard and pedestrianised shopping streets, and transport links run into the surrounding neighbourhoods from the city centre.

Lansdown rises to the north of the centre along Lansdown Hill and contains the level ground of Bath Racecourse and a mix of period housing along the main roads. Paths and minor streets climb from Central Bath to the higher ground, where the racecourse and its car parks occupy a broad plateau used for events through the year. Local services, schools and small green pockets sit between the residential streets and the main thoroughfares linking back to the city.
