Chesil Bank

Chesil Bank ward encompasses a distinctive stretch of the Dorset coastline, centred on the remarkable Chesil Beach. This eighteen-mile barrier of pebbles separates the Fleet lagoon from the English Channel, creating a unique coastal environment. The ward includes the villages of Chickerell, Langton Herring, and Fleet, which are situated on the landward side. The area is dominated by this natural formation, with its ecology and local activities heavily influenced by the shingle ridge and the protected waters of the Fleet.

The economy here has traditional ties to fishing and farming, with the Fleet being a noted source for shellfish. The Abbotsbury Swannery, located on the lagoon's edge, is a historic managed colony of mute swans. The landscape is largely open and low-lying, with the beach itself a significant feature for geologists and walkers. Settlements are small and clustered, with the wider area forming part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, recognised for its geological importance.
