About

Chichester district sits on the south coast of West Sussex, centred on the cathedral city of Chichester. The city preserves Roman layout and sections of Roman walls from its origin as Noviomagus Reginorum, and nearby Fishbourne Roman Palace houses extensive mosaics from one of the largest Roman residences in Britain. The district reaches the coast at Chichester Harbour and West Wittering and includes parts of the South Downs National Park, giving a mix of urban, agricultural and coastal landscapes.

Goodwood estate lies to the north of Chichester city and contains the racecourse, motor circuit and aerodrome that host horse racing and motor sport events including the Revival and Festival of Speed. Chichester Harbour is a tidal inlet with marked channels and moorings used by local sailing clubs; the harbour is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a string of creeks and small ports such as Bosham. Local economy combines farming, maritime services, tourism and cultural venues; district services are provided from Chichester city by the district council.
