From the quay, the rivers open into Christchurch Harbour, a sheltered estuary with mudflats and saltmarsh. The harbour is bordered by reed beds and is a noted site for birdlife. A narrow peninsula of land, Mudeford Sandbank, separates the harbour from the sea and is accessed by a small ferry.
