About

The City Walls ward is defined by the historic fortifications encircling its core. These well-preserved 17th-century walls, over a mile in circumference, create a distinct elevated boundary. Within this area lies the original street grid, containing landmarks like St. Columb's Cathedral. The layout is compact, with the walls providing a clear separation from the modern city that has developed beyond them.

This area is one of the few in Europe where the defensive walls were never breached. The bastions and gates remain fully intact, allowing for a complete circuit on foot. The ward's topography is shaped by this structure, with the Bogside area situated on a slope directly below the western section of the walls. The physical presence of the history dominates the urban space here.
