About

Cleator Moor and Frizington sit on a low ridge and valley floor shaped by former haematite workings. The 19th-century expansion for iron mining and the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway laid out streets and supplied stone for local buildings. Remnants of engine houses, spoil heaps and screened pits remain along public footpaths; community facilities include a market place, parish halls and churches from that period, and the pattern of terraces and civic buildings still reflects the townships’ industrial past.

Ennerdale occupies the long glacial trough that holds Ennerdale Water and is drained by the River Ehen. Road access is limited to narrow lanes and much of the lakeshore lacks permanent development. Since the 1990s a multi-agency scheme known as Wild Ennerdale has guided woodland regeneration, grazing and river re-alignment to reduce flood risk and encourage birch and willow growth. Fell, woodland and water are linked by public rights of way and estate tracks used by walkers, anglers and local farmers.
