Cliftonville West ward occupies the northwestern edge of the Margate area in Thanet. The district is primarily residential, characterised by a dense grid of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing. Its western boundary is formed by the Thanet Coastal Path, which runs atop chalk cliffs overlooking the North Sea. The area includes the headland of Foreness Point.

The ward contains the Margate Cemetery and Crematorium on its inland side.
