Cliftonville West ward occupies the northwestern edge of the Margate area in Thanet. The district is primarily residential, characterised by a dense grid of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing. Its western boundary is formed by the Thanet Coastal Path, which runs atop chalk cliffs overlooking the North Sea. The area includes the headland of Foreness Point.

The ward contains the Margate Cemetery and Crematorium on its inland side. A notable local feature is the presence of the Tudor House, a 16th-century timber-framed building, which is one of the oldest surviving structures in the area. The coastline here includes the rocky foreshore of Walpole Bay. Housing varies, with some streets undergoing renovation while others show signs of economic challenge.
