About

Countess Wear sits on the east bank of the River Exe where a medieval weir crosses the channel. The weir was built by Isabella de Fortibus, the Countess of Devon, in the 13th century and its effect on navigation prompted the construction of the Exeter Ship Canal in the 16th century. The A379 crosses the river here via Countess Wear bridge and there is a small lock and boatyard close to the road. The area includes residential streets, light industry and fragments of river-side marsh that change with the tide.

Downstream, Topsham occupies a triangular spit between two channels of the Exe and developed as a port from the medieval period. Narrow streets, former merchant houses and quays reflect a seafaring past; small boatyards and moorings remain on the tidal shore. The Exe estuary's saltmarsh and mudflats sit beside the town and attract waders and wildfowl through the year. Topsham Museum records local maritime and social history and the Exeter Ship Canal still links the town to stretches of the river upstream.
