About

Cricklade is a small market town situated on the River Thames, which forms its northern boundary with Gloucestershire. The town is known for its historic street plan and several medieval churches, including St Sampson's, which has a notable Norman doorway. The surrounding landscape is characterised by flat, water-meadow pastures that are part of the Thames floodplain, creating a distinct riparian environment.

Ashton Keynes lies a few miles upstream, where the infant Thames flows through the village in a series of channels and streams running alongside the streets and between houses. This network of watercourses gives the settlement a distinctive character, with numerous small stone bridges providing access to homes. The area is also defined by its proximity to the Cotswold Water Park, a large network of lakes created from former gravel pits.
