Crossens

Crossens is a district of Southport in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, located on the town’s north‑west edge where the urban area meets the coastal plain. The settlement sits on land reclaimed from marsh and the field pattern and drainage network reflect that history. Local life is concentrated along a few main streets with shops, community facilities and churches serving the neighbourhood. The area borders the salt marshes that lead toward the Ribble estuary and the terrain and land use change noticeably as you move from housing to farmland and marshland.

Transport and industrial history shaped much of Crossens. A railway station that once served the community on the line towards Preston closed in the mid 20th century, and traces of former track alignments and old drainage works remain visible in the street pattern and plots. Small allotments, corner shops and pocket parks sit alongside long straight drainage ditches left from the reclamation era, giving the district a layout tied closely to its marshland origins.
