About

Derry Hill sits on the A4 just east of Calne, where a long tree-lined drive meets the entrance to the Bowood estate. The village developed in the 18th and 19th centuries to serve the park and nearby farms, and the layout still shows that relationship: a main street with cottages, a parish church, and a pub. Bowood’s parkland and pleasure grounds are immediately accessible from the village, with lake and avenues visible from public lanes that cross the estate boundary.

Hilmarton lies a few miles north of Calne and is a parish of dispersed hamlets and arable fields. The village cluster includes Goatacre and a parish church dedicated to St Laurence, with stonework dating back to the medieval period and later repairs. Narrow lanes, hedgerows and field patterns shaped by enclosure link farmsteads and houses built from local stone. Community life centres on the church and village hall, and walkers often use rights of way that cross farmland and hedged lanes.
