About

Draycott, Westbury and Wookey lie on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, set among limestone slopes, pastures and pockets of broadleaved woodland. The River Axe runs through Wookey, cutting a short limestone gorge and feeding mill ponds and water meadows; its underground passage has created a series of caverns and passages. Farming patterns here are mixed: dairy and arable fields interspersed with hedgerows, orchards and small former quarry workings where folded beds of Carboniferous Limestone are exposed.

Villages cluster along narrow lanes and around village greens, with stone houses and small community amenities. In Wookey the cave system opens to the valley and has long been associated with local folk tales about a woman said to have been turned to stone; entrance passages and show-cave features reflect the area's karst geology. Westbury and Draycott show traces of Mendip's mining and lime-burning past in disused shafts and kiln faces visible on the slopes. The area is used for walking, local events, and small-scale agriculture, with transport routes following older field and parish boundaries.
